January 9, 2009 – From My Journal – M.C.Kejriwal School

We started off the day playing a game of squash. Very similar to racket ball, I found the sport to be quite competitive and demanding. After the game, we sat down to have a drink made from salt, lime, and soda. Believe it or not, it was quite refreshing. I later returned to my host family home to shower (Indian Shower) and finish out the rest of the day. 
At M.C.K., I had a chance to look at the teaching practices of teachers that taught student with disabilities. I was amazed with what I saw. These students engage in several physical exercises each week. These may include yoga, skating, basketball, and etc. I instructed told me that they believe that these skills strengthen the student’s minds and increase their motor skills. I found that each student had progression levels far above the norm in the U.S. The CIMA Gallery provided an excellent opportunity for us to see many of the local artist and different artistic styles around India. CIMA invited 15 India artists to respond to five artwork which profoundly impacted, Indian visual thought and history. The artworks chosen were, Bharatmata, The Santhal Family, Man with a Bouquet of Plastic Flowers, and the famous Guernica.
What finally emerged is indeed a fascinating repertoire of new ways of looking at art. This exhibit hoped to provide some insight into understanding how creative minds imbibe silently, interpret and finally redefine ideas.

January 7, 2009 Reflection
Group Study Exchange District 6980 - 3240 & 6800As I sat here, outside in this strange place, in the home of my most humble host on a meek Thursday morning overlooking two classical Indian garden in the distance, I can’t help but to flashback to my time in Morocco as a youth. The different assortment of sounds and animals ricochet all around me helps you remember the places long before forgotten. India in this extraordinarily odd way gives off this sense of inner peace which allows you to focus on self, family, spirituality, and service. I hear a man far beyond the trees in a distance chatting what sounds like a cool summer breeze on a cold winter night, waiting for the answers which India seems to give. Life is simple/complications here! Simple, in a way, that your path has only mental obstacles in your way. Nevertheless, the real India is what makes India a joy to us all. The real India is not only beautiful, but is joy and pain fused though diversity!

Purpose
The purpose of this lesson is to give the teacher an opportunity to teach, reinforce and use the 5 themes of geography with a specific country.The following lesson deals with the following of the 5 Themes of Geography: Location, Place, Human Environment Interaction, Movement, Region.
Procedure
1. With a large wall map showing ask students, where India is located? When students answer India is in Asia. Ask specifically where? If students are having trouble have one student come to the large map of Asia and show the class where India is located. Explain to students that we first looked at India's relative location (general vicinity) and then India's absolute location (exact spot)
2. Next using some pictures from magazines, or a web site, ask students what India would be like. Show students the pictures and have them describe the picture to the class. When they describe the place, show them the pictures and explain to them that these descriptions are either human or physical characteristics of a place.
3. Talk about the pictures and ask how humans have fit into their environment or what changes they have made to fit into this place. Explain to students that this is an example of human/environment interaction (human modifying their environment to fit and /or the earth dictating what humans can and cannot do).
4. Ask students what kind of products we would buy from India. When they give you examples, you will explain to them that these are examples of movement (It is our connection to India and the rest of the world).
5. Talk to the students about the different regions of India (Back of the map). Ask what these places have in common. When they talk about a place and what it might have in common with other places this is an example of region * It should be noted that even though in this specific examples, we are dealing with India, you can adapt this exercise to fit any specific region or place in the world. I like to use it at the beginning of every regional unit I start with because it reinforces the key concepts of the 5 themes.

Collaboration with Dist. 7410 and other Rotary clubs in US
I was shocked at the conditions these people live in. Especially in this village. Words can't describe the emotions I felt as I witnessed pigs and humans living and eating side by side, as if it was the normal living condition for all people. I couldn't help but wonder if I'm currently doing enough to provide a level of service to people in need. India has a side to it that many of us Americans don't see. I can't put into words the feeling I felt.
This experience will forever change my life!
That's Right !!! That's a mountain of trash!!! :-(
What are we really doing if we're not helping people which live like this? My world-view is changing more now then ever and I hope it will make me a better person for the future. I'm very impressed with how these Indian clubs get their hands dirty in the act of service.

The East Calcutta Wetlands - Jan 6
EAST CALCUTTA WETLANDS
The East Calcutta Wetlands have been degraded and destroyed by encroachment and obnoxious waste escalation, which led to the threat of getting de-listed form the Ramsar Montreaux records in 2006. The Asian Forum for Environment (SAFE) has launched its project on the wetland to restore the wetlands with a team of members under the leadership of Dr. Dipayan Dey.
As far as the eye can see there is water, 250 interconnected shallow lakes, locallyknown as bheris, which covers an area of 12,500 hectatres, comprises 52 endemic species of fish, 33 variety of birds and 20 mammals including the mud-turtle and marsh-mongoose.

Leaving Memphis Jan 3-5, 2009
January 3, 2009
After leaving Memphis, we had an 8 hour layover in Chicago. Carl's friend Bill took us to the Chicago Institute of Art where we saw many great examples of world culture in art, such as "Grant Wood," and many others. I can also remember why I live in the southern part of the United States because Chicago was unbearably cold. The skyline was great and the Institute provided a great time filler as we waited on our departure time to fly to Delhi.
